NAV end of life: What it means for your business

If your business is still running Dynamics NAV 2018
or an older version, now is the time to start planning
your next move.

Mainstream support for many older NAV versions has already ended, and extended support for NAV 2018 ends in January 2028. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, hotfixes or technical support, leaving businesses exposed to increasing security, compliance and operational risks.

While your system won't stop working overnight, remaining on an unsupported ERP platform can increase security, compliance and operational risks. It can also make it harder to take advantage of the latest AI, automation and productivity capabilities available in Dynamics 365 Business Central

The good news is that there is still time to plan. Starting your upgrade journey now gives you more time to assess your options, build a roadmap and reduce migration risk. You may also be eligible for Microsoft funding and migration incentives, helping to lower the cost of moving from NAV to Business Central.

The longer you wait, the fewer options you may have. By planning ahead today, you can reduce risk, modernise your technology and position your business for future growth.

Upgrade to Business Central

Still on NAV? It’s time to plan your next move.

There’s never been a better time to upgrade. With Dynamics NAV 2018 support ending in 2028 and end-of-life approaching, Microsoft is offering funding to help businesses move to Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Upgrading gives you a modern, secure ERP platform without the disruption of major upgrades. It’s easier to stay compliant, protected, and ready for what’s next.

Many businesses are making the move now as older NAV versions become harder to support and secure. And while upgrading can feel like a big step, if you start planning early, you can take it at a pace that’s right for your business. Plus, if you’re not ready yet, we’ll continue to support your existing solution.

Moving your Dynamics Support

Thinking about moving your Dynamics NAV support? We get it. Changing partners is a big decision. You want better support, sharper advice and a team that properly understands your setup before anyone starts poking around under the bonnet.

  • A trusted partner should have a proven onboarding process that reviews your system before support begins.
  • They should be able to demonstrate how they’ll improve and support your environment, not just promise it.
  • You should have clear visibility upfront on how your system will be supported, secured, and stabilised.

It’s the definition of partnership. Node4 feel like they’re in it to help us get what we need for our business, not the money.

Dynamics NAV FAQs

How is Business Central related to Dynamics NAV?

Dynamics 365 Business Central is just the new name for Dynamics NAV. The update of the Dynamics NAV brand has changed the name and also the technology beneath it, with C/AL code being fully replaced by AL as of Business Central version 15. We've also said goodbye to the Windows client altogether, as the modern clients (web, tablet, mobile and Outlook) take precedence.

The look and feel of the product are different: modern and clean with key information highlighted for each user at the top of the role centre. As has always been the case with this product, the core functionality remains the same and is only being improved upon as time goes on.

What is the difference between Dynamics NAV and Business Central?

In short, Dynamics 365 Business Central is just it’s new name – it’s that simple.  Dynamics NAV software dates back to the 1980s where it was known as Navision.

If you're wondering why you can't find any mention of Dynamics NAV on Microsoft's website, it's because they rebranded it to Dynamics 365 Business Central in 2018!

What is Navision?

Navision is the original name for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Microsoft acquired Navision in 2002 and later rebranded the solution as Microsoft Dynamics NAV. In 2018, Dynamics NAV evolved into Dynamics 365 Business Central, Microsoft's modern cloud ERP platform.

Is Dynamics NAV an ERP system?

Yes. Dynamics NAV is a fully integrated ERP system that helps businesses manage core operations including finance, purchasing, inventory, warehousing, sales, project management and reporting. It provides a central source of business data to improve visibility, efficiency and decision-making.

Is Dynamics NAV still supported?

Many businesses continue to run Dynamics NAV successfully today. However, support options vary depending on the version being used. As Dynamics NAV environments age, businesses often face increasing maintenance requirements, technical debt and security considerations, which is why many are evaluating their future roadmap and upgrade options.

Should I upgrade from Dynamics NAV to Business Central?

The question is no longer if they should move to Business Central, but when. Business Central is Microsoft's strategic ERP platform and receives ongoing innovation, security enhancements, regulatory updates and AI capabilities. Planning early gives businesses more flexibility, helps reduce risk and allows upgrades to align with broader business objectives rather than becoming an urgent technology project.

When does Dynamics NAV support end?

Microsoft announced that Dynamics NAV will reach end of sale on 30 April 2031. Although customers can continue running perpetual licences after this date, they will no longer be able to renew service plans, purchase additional perpetual licences or renew certain subscription licensing arrangements. For this reason, many organisations are starting to plan their move to Business Central now.
