If you've been using Microsoft Dynamics NAV for years, it's probably become one of those systems that's just "always been there". It runs the finance function, manages purchasing, handles inventory, and generally keeps the business ticking along without too much fuss.
Having worked with NAV for over 33 years, when someone starts talking about end of support, upgrades, or moving to Dynamics 365 Business Central, I totally get that people’s first reaction is often, "Do we really need to?"
But for me, the question is, ‘Should you upgrade? ’. The answer is definitely ‘Yes’. And more importantly, moving to Business Central should be seen as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience.
Microsoft's final NAV release, Dynamics NAV 2018, is currently in extended support, with that support ending in January 2028. Earlier versions have already reached the end of their support lifecycle. Once support ends, there are no more security updates, bug fixes, regulatory changes, or product enhancements coming from Microsoft. And while we can build some of those, it’s just adding cost and technical debt, and some are non-fixable.
What’s The Real Cost of Staying on NAV?
Many businesses continue running older NAV environments because "it still works."
In our experience, we see businesses find themselves investing more time and money keeping older systems alive. Integrations become harder to maintain, security concerns increase, and finding people with specialist NAV knowledge is becoming more difficult; the new generation doesn’t want to learn old systems.
Maintaining this becomes increasingly expensive compared to using a modern system that is designed to evolve automatically.
As Microsoft continues investing heavily in Business Central, the gap between what NAV can do and what's possible in a modern ERP grows wider every year. You just have to see the impact that Copilot and AI agents are already having in the Business Central world to appreciate how much you are potentially missing out on.
Business Central Isn't Just NAV with a New Name
One of the biggest misconceptions, and something we’ve heard over and over again, is that moving to Business Central is simply a software upgrade; after all, it is just NAV in a new dress!
It isn't. Business Central is absolutely the next generation of the NAV product line, but it’s built to support the way businesses work today and with an underpinning technology to embrace future evolutions.
Think about some of the challenges businesses face:
- Remote and hybrid working
- Cybersecurity requirements
- Faster reporting expectations
- Integration with Microsoft 365
- Automation of manual processes
- Access to data from anywhere
- Upgrading to the latest versions (almost unheard of in the old NAV world)
These aren't trends; they're everyday business requirements.
Business Central has been designed around these needs, providing seamless integration with the Microsoft landscape, be it Outlook, Excel, Teams, Power BI, Power Platform, Copilot and Microsoft's wider cloud ecosystem.
Migrating is More Than a Technology Project
The most successful NAV migrations start with asking a simple question:
"If we were implementing our ERP system today, would we design it the same way?"
For most businesses, the answer is no. Because platforms have functionally improved and the surrounding ecosystems offer so much more opportunity and flexibility to deliver the solution you need today and what comes tomorrow. Years of customisations, workarounds, and inherited processes can make even the best NAV environment more complex than it needs to be. That will never be the case with Business Central.
A migration to Business Central creates the perfect opportunity to:
- Review business processes
- Remove unnecessary customisations
- Improve data quality
- Simplify integrations
- Introduce automation and AI
- Reduce infrastructure costs
Rather than lifting every historical issue into a new system, businesses can take a step back and create a cleaner, more efficient platform for the future.
Continuous Innovation Instead of Major Upgrades
If you've lived through previous NAV upgrades, you'll know they were often significant projects, in a lot of cases not far from what the original implementation was in terms of cost and effort.
Business Central changes that model in a significantly fundamental way.
Instead of waiting years for a major release, Microsoft delivers regular enhancements, security improvements, new functionality, and platform innovations as part of the service, in fact, twice a year.
That means you and your business gain access to new capabilities faster and avoid falling years behind on technology. Because in the SaaS world, and the way we now extend the product, you can continually upgrade with very little cost or effort, you can find out more about how we do this by reading about our Evergreen service.
Perhaps one of the most exciting and revolutionary areas in the last few years has been Microsoft’s continued investment in AI. Features such as Copilot-assisted tasks, intelligent forecasting, and automated processes are arriving in Business Central first, not NAV.
The Earlier You Start Planning, the Better
One mistake many businesses make is viewing a support deadline as the point where they need to begin thinking about migration.
In reality, the businesses that will get the most value and be most prepared are the ones that start planning well before any deadline approaches.
By starting early and being ahead of the pack, it will give you time to:
- Assess existing customisations
- Understand integration requirements
- Clean data
- Train users
- Develop a phased roadmap
- Align the project with wider business objectives
A planned migration is far less disruptive than a rushed one driven by an upcoming support deadline and everyone clambering for attention.
Funding Could Make the Move Easier
There’s also a practical reason to start the conversation sooner rather than later. There may be funding and support available to help make the move from NAV to Business Central less scary.
Microsoft’s current migration programmes include Bridge to Cloud 3, which offers discounted Business Central cloud licence pricing (30% of for 3 years) and, if you reach a certain threshold, the potential for additional free user licences for up to 2 years. There’s also the BC Migration Voucher Programme, which can provide financial support to help offset migration costs for qualifying migrations. In some cases, customers that meet the relevant licensing thresholds may also be eligible for Microsoft-funded deployment support through the CSP Deployment Accelerator programme, helping to offset the cost of migration, deployment and adoption activities.
It’s not something every business will automatically qualify for, and the details will depend on eligibility and timing, but it is worth exploring what Microsoft can do to support your migration and not simply assume the full cost sits with you.

Looking Forward
The end of Dynamics NAV isn't something to fear. NAV has had an incredible run and has helped thousands of businesses grow and evolve over several decades. But technology moves on, and Microsoft has made it clear that Business Central is the future of its ERP platform.
Take advantage of a more secure, more flexible, and more capable platform that can support the next phase of your business growth.
