Busting Tech Myths This National Apprenticeship Week

We believe that a career in tech is for everyone, regardless of age, background, or experience.

This dedication is not limited to National Apprenticeship Week though. It’s a constant effort to improve and create an inclusive environment where everyone can do more. We believe that fostering a diverse and equitable workplace is essential for innovation and growth, and we’re proud to support our apprentices every step of the way.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re wanting to debunk some common myths about tech apprenticeships and highlight how we’re at the forefront of creating opportunities for everyone. So, what are these common misconceptions?

  1. Apprenticeships are only for manual roles
  1. Apprenticeships are just for young people
  1. Apprenticeships are not as valuable as a university degree
  1. Hiring an apprentice is a burden for businesses
  1. Apprenticeships don’t lead to high-paying jobs
  1. You need to be a coding expert to work in tech
  1. Women are not as successful in tech as men

Many people think apprenticeships are just for trades like construction or plumbing. However, apprenticeships are available in a wide range of industries, including technology, financial services, healthcare, business management & services, and more. We offer a range of apprenticeships across tech, finance, business admin and more that provide hands-on experience in revolutionary technologies.

Our apprenticeship schemes are open to anyone aged 16 or older. They’re a fantastic way for people of all ages to gain new skills and qualifications, whether they are starting their career or looking to change direction, we welcome apprentices of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.

“Apprenticeships at Node4 are a dynamic pathway for all ages, providing opportunities to grow and thrive at any stage of your career. We’ve seen individuals aged 18-40+ embrace this journey; it’s never too early—or too late—to learn and succeed.”

Jennifer Allam, Talent and Culture Advisor.

Many apprenticeships are designed for beginners and provide all the training needed to succeed. Even if you have no prior experience in tech, you can still start an apprenticeship and build your skills from the ground up, programs are tailored to help you grow and thrive in the tech industry. Hands-on experience and practical skills are highly valued by employers, and this is a great place to start. Whether you’re just leaving school and the start of your career, or you’ve been part of the industry for a while and starting to feel like you could do more. Many apprentices go on to have successful careers in tech – earning whilst learning – without the student debts often associated with attending university!

We recognise the value of apprenticeships and the unique perspectives they bring to our team. Apprenticeships are a valuable recruiting tool and can help businesses build a skilled and diverse workforce. They bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm, and many employers find that apprenticeships boost staff loyalty and motivation. It’s important that we nurture talent and passion, investing in the rapidly growing future of the tech world.

Let’s bust the myth that apprenticeships don’t lead to a well-paid career. The tech industry is known for its competitive salaries, and apprenticeships can be a stepping stone to exciting and high-paying roles. There are numerous positions in tech that focus on project management, user experience design, sales, marketing, and more. By offering a variety of apprenticeship programs that cater to different interests and skill sets, we’re enabling more success for our apprentice’s future.

There’s no hiding the stereotype that technology has historically been a male dominated industry. However, we’re prepared to tackle that stigma and are dedicated to promoting gender diversity and supporting all people in tech through our apprenticeship programs, internal policies and a series of initiatives, activities and events across the year to show our support for all people across our organisation regardless of background and gender.

We’re making sure that we are at the forefront of creating careers in tech for all people. We’re passionate about the industry we’re in and are committed to breaking down barriers and debunking myths about apprenticeships, because we are made for people.
