The first phase of its migration to Microsoft Azure has already resulted in reduced costs, improved flexibility, and enhanced performance

Technology | Software and Services | over 2000 employees

The Client

Industry: Technology (Software and Services)
Location: United Kingdom
Number of Employees: Over 2,000
Core Business: Enterprise software and IT services for public and private sectors.

The Challenge

A technology organisation had been hosting over 100 Windows-based servers in a datacenter managed by Blackknight. Faced with increasing costs and limited scalability, they aimed to transition to Microsoft Azure to improve flexibility and reduce operational expenses. The challenge was to ensure a smooth migration with minimal disruption to ongoing services, beginning with a first tranche of 30 servers.

The solution

Migration to Azure Using Azure Migrate

Node4 partnered with the organisation to carry out a phased migration of their Windows servers to Microsoft Azure. Using Azure Migrate, the migration strategy was designed to ensure minimal downtime and secure data transfer from the Blackknight datacenter.

  • Azure Migrate was used to assess the existing workloads and manage the migration process.
  • The first phase of the migration involved the successful transition of 30 Windows servers, with the remaining servers to follow in subsequent tranches.
  • All servers were moved to Azure Virtual Machines, optimising performance and scalability while ensuring minimal service disruption.

The outcome

The first phase of the migration provided the following key outcomes:

  • Reduced Costs: The organisation began reducing hosting costs by transitioning away from Blackknight to Azure’s cost-effective cloud infrastructure.
  • Enhanced Scalability and Flexibility: By moving the first 30 servers to Azure, the technology organisation now benefits from the flexibility to scale resources based on business demands.
  • Improved Performance: The migration to Azure Virtual Machines resulted in a more efficient and secure environment, supporting business-critical

The conclusion

With Node4’s expertise, the project has successfully completed the first phase of its migration to Microsoft Azure, moving 30 out of over 100 Windows servers. This has already resulted in reduced costs, improved flexibility, and enhanced performance, positioning the organization to complete the migration of the remaining servers in the near future and take full advantage of Azure’s scalability and security.
