Local government server migration to Azure

A successful migration of Windows servers to Microsoft Azure

Hampshire | Local Government | ~300 employees

The Client

Industry: Public Sector (Local Government)
Location: Hampshire, United Kingdom
Number of Employees: Approximately 300
Core Business: Local government services, including planning, environmental health, housing, and community welfare programs.

The challenge

A district council was hosting 40 Windows-based servers in a data centre managed by Capita. The council aimed to reduce operational costs and gain greater control over its IT infrastructure. The primary objective was to migrate to Microsoft Azure to enhance scalability and service reliability while minimizing disruptions during the migration process.

The solution

Migration to Azure Using Azure Migrate

Node4 partnered with the council to execute the migration of their Windows servers to Microsoft Azure. The migration leveraged Azure Migrate to ensure a smooth transition from Capita’s data centre.

  • Azure Migrate assessed the existing workloads and facilitated the migration strategy.
  • Key workloads were rebuilt as Azure Virtual Machines, utilising the latest Windows Server operating system.
  • Critical data was transferred using Azure Databox and secure FTP, minimising impact on daily operations while ensuring data integrity.

The outcome

The migration provided several key benefits:

  • Reduced Hosting Costs: The council successfully cut its infrastructure costs by moving from Capita’s data centre to Azure.
  • Modernised IT Environment: The servers were upgraded to the latest Windows Server versions, enhancing security and performance.
  • Enhanced Security and Reliability: The migration to Azure improved service reliability, providing the council with a more secure and resilient IT environment.

The Conclusion

The successful migration of Windows servers to Microsoft Azure, led by Node4, resulted in reduced costs, improved scalability, and enhanced security. By leveraging Azure Migrate and modernising its infrastructure, the council is now better positioned to meet future demands while ensuring reliable service delivery.
